Positive clearance means a gap; negative clearance means interference. This calculator classifies the geometric limit condition only. It does not calculate assembly force, contact pressure, temperature effects, surface roughness or material yielding.

Fit classification

Clearance fit: even the largest shaft is smaller than the smallest hole. Interference fit: even the smallest shaft is larger than the largest hole. Transition fit: tolerance variation can produce either clearance or interference.
