AI is entering the engineering stack at several different layers
“AI for engineering” is not one product category. Some companies generate or reconstruct CAD, some automate drawings, some build physics surrogates, and others target CAM, assembly planning or factory digitalization. Comparing them as if they all solve the same problem creates more confusion than insight.

Look past “AI” and inspect the engineering artifact
The most important questions are what goes in, what comes out, whether the result is editable and auditable, and what still requires human verification.
1. Geometry quality
For CAD tools, distinguish editable parametric B-rep/feature history from a visual mesh. A manufacturer needs controlled geometry, not just a plausible render.
2. Physics validity
For surrogate and optimization tools, ask about the validated domain, uncertainty, boundary conditions and the high-fidelity CAE or testing used for confirmation.
3. Manufacturing context
For DFM/CAM tools, verify that actual machines, tooling, material, fixtures, tolerances and supplier capability are represented rather than assumed.
4. Data governance
Engineering data can contain valuable IP. Understand cloud/on-prem deployment, retention, model training policies, permissions and revision control.
5. Human release gate
Automation should make review faster, not remove responsibility. Released CAD, drawings, CAM and instructions need traceable engineering approval.
6. Integration
The strongest tool is often the one that returns useful artifacts to the CAD/CAE/CAM/PLM stack your engineers already use.
